About the Exhibition

postscript/追伸 is a collaborative project between Melbourne-based artist Stephen Palmer and Tokyo-based artist Utako Shindo, developed out of a long running dialogue related to shared interests in translation, displacement, gesture, and the rifts between points of perception in time and space. The exhibition has been developed in correspondence, through email and skype conversations, and the exchange of photographs and drawings.

About the Artists

Stephen Palmer is an artist and writer based in Melbourne. Recent practice employs video, text and photography, and is concerned with the uncertainties of perception and transcription. He has persisted in teaching at various art schools in Melbourne, and is completing a PhD at the VCA. Exhibitions include Endless Projection (Blindside, forthcoming), The Anxiety of the Relation (Margaret Lawrence Gallery, 2018), Vexed Appendix (George Paton Gallery, 2015), Hesitation (BUS Projects, 2014) and Faux Novel (RMIT Project Space, 2014). He was a facilitator of Light Projects ARI, Northcote (2009-11).

Working between Australia and Japan since 2003, Utako Shindo explores the poetics of (untranslatability, and semantic and material translation/transformation in art. Her art employs the various ‘transfer’ (known as ‘utsuru’ in Japanese, meaning reflect, project, trace, emerge and transfer) processes, manifested as drawing, print, relief, photography and video, which often together comprise an installation work. She completed her Ph.D. at the Centre for Ideas, VCA&MCM, the University of Melbourne in 2017, and is currently an adjunct lecturer at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo. Recent exhibitions include, Reminiscent of long gone by, Sutton Gallery, Melbourne, 2018; unJapan, Kanzan Gallery, Tokyo, 2017.
