DREAM SEA MOVIE WATER
5 – 26 November 2016
Opening & Artist Talk | Saturday 5 November 4pm
The Gold Coast’s theme parks – Dream, Sea, Movie and Water – act as markers for the four cardinal directions of Rebecca’s world. ‘The worlds,’ as they are commonly known serve as compass points from which to orient the practice, and a conceptual framework for exploring ideas and processes that surfaced in the Summer of 2015.
This new suite of works navigates and maps out images of leisure, culture, fashion and architecture, whilst engaging daily practices of walking, riding, skating, learning to surf, surfing the net and art making. The works are a culmination of studying, collecting and gazing at the slogans, pastimes and (web)sites that shape the place where Rebecca lives and works in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, or, as it is known nationally ‘Australia’s Playground’. DREAM SEA MOVIE WATER continues, in a playful form, Rebecca’s engagement with topography, and ideas of place, placement, site, situation and orientation.
Rebecca Ross lives and works on Queensland’s Gold Coast where she is as an artist, an academic at Queensland College of Art Griffith University, and as Artistic Director of The Walls Art Space which she founded in 2013.
